Olive Oil's Health Benefits

Olive oil has been extensively studied for its effect on human health, involving areas such as:

  • Reducing the risk of heart diseases and some types of cancer.
  • Helping to maintain a low blood pressure and to alleviate arthritis.
  • Helping cardiovascular flow and delay in the cell ageing process due to antioxidant content.
  • Aiding digestion and helping the body to absorb calcium.
  • Helping to improve the appearance and texture of our skin.

The following is a compilation of articles related to different areas of research.

Olive Oil Fights Heart Disease, Breast Cancer, Studies Say

Stefan Lovgren, National Geographic News

Olive Oil

Better Health Channel, State of Victoria (Australia)
July 2008

The Mediterranean diet and consumption of olive oil is associated with a low incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The Lyon Diet Heart Study reported lower rates of coronary recurrence in people who consumed a Mediterranean diet. Other studies have focused specifically on olive oil and show that use of olive oil may reduce cardiovascular risk factors by decreasing plasma triglycerides, total and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, platelet activation, inflammation and oxidative damage. It is also thought to increase high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and antioxidant status.

Research suggests that olive oil may also have a role in lowering the risk of several types of cancers, including breast, colon, lung, ovarian and skin cancers. Chemical compounds specific to olive oil, known as phenolics, appear to combat the build-up of free radicals in the body and may be able to reduce oxidative damage to DNA.

A number of studies have shown that olive oil may also help reduce or manage blood pressure, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis and immune function.

Memory

Deborah Neffa, National Geographic
9 July 2008, ver. 9

A balanced diet and regular exercise are also good ways to keep an active memory healthy, slow the onset of dementia (a progressive decline in cognitive function), and maybe even prevent the development of Alzheimer's. Eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants—including fish, nuts, olive oil, and blueberries—is especially helpful, as is getting plenty of exercise, which increases blood flow to the brain and stimulates hormone production and nerve growth. Exercising the brain through such activities as reading, writing, working puzzles, visiting museums, and playing cards may also help prevent memory cobwebs, though there’s no guarantee such activities will have a significant effect.

Effect of ingestion of virgin olive oil on human low-density lipoprotein composition

Conclusion: After ingestion of virgin olive oil, an increase in antioxidants and oleic acid in LDL was observed as well as an improvement of LDL resistance to oxidation. Our results support the idea that daily ingestion of virgin olive oil could protect LDL from oxidation.
